Founded in 1964 by Dr. James Steele, the American Veterinary One Health Society (AVOHS) was formerly known as the American Veterinary Epidemiological Society (AVES, 1964-2023). The name was changed to AVOHS in 2023. Each year since 1964 at its annual meeting the AVES/AVOHS has presented a One Health Gold Headed Cane Award to one or two professionals who have had outstanding careers in veterinary medicine and One Health.
