People, Primates, and Parks: One Health at work in Rwanda

Wild mountain gorillas are the ideal One Health sentinels – their survival depends on habitat protection, controlling poaching and human conflict, preventing zoonotic disease transmission, and managing tourism activities. Gorilla Doctors, a non-profit organization working in Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, exemplifies One Health in action. Their innovative program includes providing preventative medicine for people who contact gorillas, monitoring gorilla’s health in the wild, and protecting essential habitats.
