Special Lecture - One Health: Antimicrobial Resistance

This co-curricular lecture explores One Health through the challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), highlighting its circulation among human, animal and environmental health. Using antibiotic use in livestock as a case study, the session examines antimicrobial residues and resistant microorganisms across the food chain and their potential dissemination through animal waste, sewage and the wider environment. Students will consider laboratory approaches to antimicrobial susceptibility and residue detection, alongside wastewater treatment, environmental monitoring, contaminant mitigation and bioremediation strategies. Through an interdisciplinary discussion, students from pet care, molecular testing and civil engineering will examine how their respective disciplines can contribute to practical and sustainable One Health solutions.
